In 1997, Ms. Rowland earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She pursued fine arts not only as a passion, but as a career, taking positions as an Art Instructor at The Creative Discovery Museum in 1998 and The Capital Hill Arts Workshop in 2006. She entered the world of Art Education, teaching art at Hammond Middle School and the Meritt Academy in 2007. In 2009, Ms. Rowland returned to school as both a preschool teacher and a graduate student. She earned her Master of Arts degree in Arts Education from Boston University in May 2011.
Prior to joining BASIS Independent McLean, Ms. Rowland taught middle and high school studio art at St. Anselm's Abbey School in D.C. Beginning in December 2011, she also launched an Advanced Placement (AP) Art program in 2014. What attracted Ms. Rowland to BASIS Independent McLean was the focus on the creative thinking process that engages students to think beyond “yes” and “no” answers and develop an acceptance of new ideas in learning and teaching.
Since 2007, Ms. Rowland has been coaching for NCAP - Nation's Capital Swim Club of Alexandria, VA. Currently she coaches 9-year-olds and under, as well as the High School Fitness program at Lee District Recreational Center. Ms. Rowland has four sisters, nine nieces and nephews, and grew up near Chattanooga, Tennessee on Signal Mountain. You will find her in the glass studio breaking glass on Tuesday nights while creating stained and fused glass art objects. Wednesday nights are reserved for Pilates!
