Ms. Smith

PreK Teacher

 

Mrs. Smith is a graduate of the George Mason University Graduate School of Education where she received her Master’s in Education degree in Early Childhood Curriculum and Instruction, Summa Cum Laude in 2011. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Roberts Wesleyan College in 2007 where she was the Class of 2007 president from 2004 – 2007.

Mrs. Smith began her career in education on staff with Teach For America in the Las Vegas Valley region in 2007 before moving to Washington, D.C., as a corps member in 2009, where she taught second grade and PreK. In 2011, Mrs. Smith was part of the founding PreK team at KIPP DC: Discover Academy in Anacostia where she was grade level leader from 2013-2017 and the Teacher to Teacher award recipient in June 2016.

Mrs. Smith’s deepest desire as a BASIS Independent educator is to provide a joyful, safe and learning-focused community for children so that they are empowered to be curious, motivated and risk-takers. She believes that when students are held to high academic and behavioral expectations they are able to access accelerated opportunities and become the change-agents of our future.

In her free time, Mrs. Smith is Pure Barre enthusiast, an interior and event designer side-hustler, the test-taster for all of her husband’s gourmet cooking and most significantly mama to Elsa who is joining Basis Independent as a PreK student in 2017.
