Where’s the music? The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

Hello again!

Last week was the first week of my internship and this week is my research week. I had to switch these two weeks to coincide with my advisor’s spring break.

I have some experience sorting music with Dr. Lapple over the summer, but we worked together and had an extra hand helping us. Now, it is only me sorting through the first filing cabinet. My job was to sort through stacks of music and scores that were all shuffled into a disorganized fashion. Most of the music I sorted are wind ensemble pieces. Which means that I have to account for many instruments, parts, and duplicate pages.

The parts were scattered in a giant stack of music, and I had to sort which piece did they belong too. While sorting all of this paper, I realized just how taxing it is on my body to do this work. There were so many pieces that most of the piles migrated to the floor. I also have to clean up after myself too. In the end, I got an unintentional workout from this sorting.

After sorting a couple drawers this week, I also organized all the sorted pieces to make sure they all had a copy of every part. If there was a missing part, a new one had to be ordered. Along with this organization, I also inputted the music into a file on Excel so I can alphabetize the titles and record what I have sorted. My eyesight is blurring together but this for the sake of music!

This is a tedious process, but it is also necessary because Dr. Lapple needs to find all of this music for future lessons, auditions, workshops, rehearsals, and concerts.

What is this crazy idea of cleaning up after yourself and others ? Welcome to your first steps into being an adult – years in the art room should have given you a start on being responsible for the mess you make and clean it up so you can find it next.
