Earth Day

May 05, 2020

The day finally arrived: Earth Day was the largest event I have experienced at Virginia Youth Climate Strike in my time there. Since we couldn’t have a normal strike outside, the state team hosted the strike on a Zoom call with 50-60 people. We had different speakers, including former Fairfax County School Board member Ryan McElveen, touch upon important topics relevant to climate justice (ex: sustainability, how to prevent pipeline construction in Southwest VA, etc). In our group phone banking session, we called Virginia legislators that we consider opponents of climate justice and left a message asking them to support the Virginia Green New Deal, amongst other demands.

Overall the strike went well, especially in helping the mental health of all of us at VAYCS. After our Earth Day strike, both the VAYCS Earth Day video and our VA Policy Team video were posted on our Instagram page (and excitingly enough on the Instagram story of US Youth Climate Strike). I have attached links to both videos on Youtube, and until next time, enjoy!
