I finally decided upon a smaller set of asphalt pavement roads to focus my study on. This means that I can exclude concrete as a whole, which might not have been a bad idea in the first place, since my on-site mentor said that the effects of heavy loads on asphalt are more immediately noticeable.
Looking at the data, it’s apparent that there are certain types of damage correlated with existence of heavy traffic, such as longitudinal cracking and rutting. Rutting is just the creation of indents in the road along where the tires exerted pressure. This doesn’t really show as much in the concrete data, so it’s nice to have some affirmation that I’m getting somewhere, even if it isn’t where I intended to be at this point in my internship.
