I have completed the third week of my internship and managed to complete my first task of finishing cataloging the vast library that my internship has to offer. In looking through all these books, I found some eye catching books that would help me further answer my research question. One such books is Counseling Older People: Opportunities and Challenges by Charlene M. Kampfe. In this book, Kampfe addresses issues such as inability to communicate and loss of senses as a part of the reason for troubles communicating with therapists. This book also addresses issues such as the death of a same- sex partner. In this tragedy, the grieving partner is often excluded from the grieving process by the family of the diseased leading to feelings of alienation and loneliness. Anxiety of death, preparation for death and financial burdens of assisted living facilities are also discussed in this book.
Overall, this book was eye opening in understanding the mental and emotional struggles of the elderly that I have never thought about. Using the knowledge from this book, I can see how these anxieties and troubles faced by the elderly could be eased a little with Art Therapy. Next week, I hope to do more research on the Jungian perspective that my mentor, Ms. Glacel, uses in her practice.
