Week 8: Docutime!

May 11, 2021

Hello everybody!

I’ve officially put together almost half of my documentary! Although my script is practically unreadable, somehow through the madness a perfect system has come about.

This week, I wanted to talk about something a little more serious. In my regular check-in’s with my mentor Dr. Moon, we discussed something pretty eye-opening. My experience as a child of an immigrant has been pretty smooth running. Although both my parents came from difficult backgrounds, they both have been able to be independently successful and I am so grateful for all they’ve given me. I’ve lived in McLean all my life and as most of you know, this is a pretty wealthy area.

In the NoVA area, there is an influx of immigrants and refugees yearly. This is due to many things: a rich, diverse community, top-ranked public and private schools, and location. However, something that many people don’t tend to think about, is that a lot of the resources can be taken away from the people who have lived here for hundreds of years, namely the African American community.

I’ve learned that yes, the immigrant experience is completely, wholly valid, but the experience of African Americans is equally valid. Local governments, organizations, and residents must do their part to recognize this.

As you can tell, I’ve gained a whole new purpose with this documentary that revealed a personal journey as well as a journey to understand my community as well. I hope my documentary will complete some of this initiative to validate both the immigrant, refugee, and Black experience.

Thank you for listening and see you next week,
