• Project Title: Troubled Waters: Change in Marine Oil Spill Prevention Regulations from 1969 to 2010

  • BASIS Advisor: Ms. May and Ms. Conyers

  • Internship Location: American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers

  • Onsite Mentor: Airika Walker

Since the Deepwater Horizon disaster, oil drilling has moved into deeper waters. Drilling in deeper waters is more productive and profitable than drilling on the continental shelf but also has more risks due to the dangerous conditions of the drilling. Furthermore, it is vital for the government to learn from past disasters to help prevent future disasters. This project will attempt to determine how regulations to prevent and adequately respond to marine oil spills have evolved from 1969 to 2010 and the effectiveness of these regulations and the implications for the future. I will be working with Airika Walker at the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM). AFPM is a trade association that represents many American fuel manufacturers. By working with AFPM.
