Project Title: Art & Alzheimer's
BASIS Advisor: Matt Ramsby
Internship Location: Seven Corners Psychotherapy
Onsite Mentor: Dr. Jennifer Glacel
The seemingly unrelated concepts of art and Alzheimer’s disease may have a lot more in common than you think! In my research project, I attempt to answer the question “Is Art Therapy a viable option for treating Alzheimer’s Diseases?” I will try to understand if art therapy can be used to control the cognitive symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. In order to gather a deeper understanding of the topic of art therapy, I will be working with Ms. Jennifer Glacel at Seven Corners Psychotherapy. Through this internship, I will learn more about play therapy, a specific branch of art therapy, and will assist Ms. Glacel in educating patients about what art therapy is. In addition to this, Ms. Glacel has provided me with extensive resources such as books and research articles that will help me answer my initial research question. Through my research, I hope to prove that art therapy can be used to help patients with Alzheimer’s. With an increasing elderly population and a predicted number of 14 million Alzheimer’s disease patients in the United States by 2060, finding alternative treatment options for Alzheimer’s is imperative.
