Sports & AthleticsBeing a BASIS Independent McLean Red-Tailed Hawk means actively participating in a vibrant learning community, enjoying endless opportunities to connect studies with the real world, discovering new talents and skills, and building lasting bonds of friendship and camaraderie.
I enjoy participating in Quiz Bowl. Our team went to the National Quiz Bowl Championships in Atlanta with 1,200 students from across the U.S.! I also participate in History Bee and Geography Bee and competed in the National History Bee this year.
I like being surrounded by students who are passionate about learning because we are able to grow and improve by helping each other. That combined with the support that you receive from teachers and staff really makes this school unique. Students are encouraged to think about what they want to do and are given the guidance and space to get there.
I am in the journalism club and a cappella. I joined the dance team in the spring, and I am a student ambassador. I wanted to be a student ambassador because I remembered how much my shadow day helped me decide to come here. I like meeting new people and want to help others see our school.
For my extracurriculars, I swim two to three hours a day on a competitive swim team. I also participate in Physics Olympiad, help coach a local swim team, and do peer tutoring at BASIS Independent McLean.
The biggest difference between BASIS Independent McLean and my previous school is the curriculum and course structure. The way the classes build upon themselves really gives you a great foundation, not just for AP classes, but your knowledge base, too.
The BASIS Independent McLean learning community of students, teachers, and administrators worked together to create a set of school-wide expectations to be carried from classroom to classroom, grade to grade, and to establish a strong sense of community. The underlying concept of this set of expectations is simple: respect.
Since our founding in 2016, we have been steadily building a comprehensive sports and athletics program ranging from interscholastic, competitive team sports to individual, movement-based after school activities. Our approach to athletics promotes healthy competition and empowers students with the discipline, grit, and persistence to become leaders on and off the court.
From cooking to theater, coding to History Bowl, our clubs & activities help students grow into well-rounded learners and discover their passions. Our unique approach to clubs & activities at BASIS Independent McLean empowers students to create or help develop a program where they see a need beyond what is offered.
Our educational philosophy is centered around student autonomy and self-advocacy. To support these values, we’ve designed specific services to help empower students when they come to school each day. We also offer many critical auxiliary services such as a lunch program, before-and after-school care, and transportation.
Our content-rich curriculum is complemented by many opportunities for students to see ideas in action—both in and out of the classroom. We delight in giving students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of course material and how it relates to the world around them, to tap into their five senses and explore problems from new angles.
Learning and fun don’t stop when the regular school year ends! BASIS Independent Summer offers a variety of academic programs and is conveniently located on our school campus and taught by many of our expert educators and staff.
