Capstone Courses and Senior Projects

The Senior Year at BASIS Independent Schools is unlike any other—traditional classroom learning has been completed, most students have Advanced Placement (AP) course requirements finished.

As such, students will typically spend their year taking Capstone Courses and developing their inquiry skills in a Senior Project, where connections come full circle.

BASIS Curriculum Seniors and Their Projects

Capstone Courses

Our advanced curriculum enables our students to go above and beyond what is traditionally offered in most American schools. Capstone Courses transition students from student-centered learning to independent learning.

This year, BASIS Independent Schools offers the following Capstone Courses that tap into the expertise and passions of our subject expert teachers. We look forward to growing our offering in years to come:

  • Multi-Variable Vector Calculus
  • Game Theory and Behavioral Economics
  • The Biology of Cancer
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Immigration Narratives
  • Post-Colonial Literature
  • Various Language Capstones (focused on translation)

These courses delve deeply into advanced material and are roughly equivalent to upper-level college courses. The result is that BASIS Independent Schools students enter the nation's most prestigious universities and colleges prepared to excel in at least intermediate-level college work.

The Senior Project

A BASIS Independent education cultivates students who are highly engaged, inquisitive and autonomous learners. The Senior Project is the culmination of the BASIS Independent high school experience. After three and a half years of intensive academic college preparation, BASIS Independent seniors are ready to spend the last trimester of their high school careers applying what they have learned in previous years to an independent project that allows them to explore their individual path of learning, their passion and their potential future course of study.

Students embark on a mentor-guided program of academic inquiry with limitless possibilities. Senior Projects vary from internships to experimental research at university-level research labs and field work abroad. To remain connected to their school community, students are required to blog about their experiences.

The Class of 2017 was an important milestone for our BASIS Independent Schools family as the first cohort to participate in Senior Projects. This year, the Class of 2018 has followed in their footsteps with equal fervor and prowess. Explore their projects and blogs here.

From an analysis of machine learning in order to diagnose lung cancer through CT image classification to creating a line of upcycled and eco-friendly clothing, this year's projects are an incredible display of the talents and rich interests of our students.
